The word acolyte means “follower” or “attendant.” Acolytes are worship leaders, and even though they usually don’t have speaking assignments during the liturgy, theirs is a ministry of proclamation and celebration.
At Redeemer, both youths and adults participate as acolytes. All volunteers wishing to participate in this ministry are welcome. Acolytes assist the priest in carrying out the sacraments of the Church. They perform various roles within the service and process certain liturgical items such as crosses and the Gospel book. Acolytes are also servers, assisting the priest in setting the table for Holy Communion and helping at the offertory.
Training is required and is provided prior to serving. There is also a training document to assist new volunteers. Various commitment levels are welcomed. An acolyte schedule is prepared by the head acolyte each quarter.
